Toxu

Dance performance exploring the pull towards Europe

In Wolof, Toxu means to relocate or move house. Countless young people cross deserts and seas, all in pursuit of the same goal: a better life, or as they say in Senegal “Barça walla barsakh”, Barcelona or death. Around the world, goods and people, values and cultures, ideas and dreams are in flux. The young people of Africa want a slice of the good life too. But what can they expect when they arrive in Europe, if they even manage to get there? Who is responsible for this exodus and for every person who does not survive the journey? Through the medium of dance and documentary research, three young dancers from Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo explore the desperate longing for a life in Europe that haunts their generation.
