Derive

In the context of the opening festival of the new cultural centre Ancienne Gare in Fribourg, the Belluard Bollwerk International will present Dérive, a project by the German choreographer Jochen Roller. Dérives are guided tours through a city, based on a technique of Guy Debord and the French Situationists. After Graz (A), Leuven (B) and Zagreb (HR) this project will take place for the first time in Switzerland, in Fribourg. The concept of the dérive suggests an alternative form of movement through the urban space: instead of getting from A to B in the most effective (meaning the shortest or quickest way) one follows a different movement concept or task. This is derived, for example, from an algorithm (such as "first right, second left") or it is based on manipulated maps (e.g. "using a map of another city"). The Dérive proposed by Jochen Roller will offer an interactive, individual exploration of Fribourg. Roller will design a special movement score and invite the participants to get lost in their own city; to perceive their environment in a new light and to find themselves in unexpected situations. After each Dérive, there will be a talk with Sally De Kunst, the new director of the Belluard Bollwerk International. The collected material of the Dérives will be presented in an exhibition at the Ancienne Gare.
