What is crossover? The term can refer to the short-lived musical movement in the 1990s that fused metal guitars and the spoken-word elements of hip hop. Yet, as the intriguing African-European music combo, uKanDanz, forcefully demonstrate, crossover can mean something entirely different, namely the transgression and breaking down of borders, whether geographical, cultural or musical. The charismatic and popular Ethiopian vocalist, Asnake Guebreyes, backed by his French quartet, creates a dazzling display of musical fireworks that blend traditional African music with free jazz, classic rock, prog rock, punk and Noise.
