Foîdîn Mearthail & I luuv merika, godddammdit

« Foîdîn Mearthail »

Mearthail (Stray Sod) is a patch of land frequented by fairies. When a person steps on this sod they become lost and disorientated, unable to find their way. Sometimes it is also believed to be the burial place of an unbaptised child. To undo the spell, one must take off their jacket, turn it inside out and wear it that way until the state of vertigo has ceased.

"Foîdîn Mearthail" marks the first live performance to emerge out of the ongoing collaboration between choreographer/performer Cindy Cummings, photographer Amelia Stein and sound poet Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill. Since 1992 they have been using movement, sound patterns and instant photographie images to explore the theme of the female body as a site of conflict and a major symbol of power struggle in latterday Ireland.

« I luuv merika, godddammdit »

"Being an ex-partiot American living in Ireland for three and a half years creates its own parameters and helps to focus my work. I ssimilate a different cultural perspective through which I then explore and redefine a sense of my own history. This piece of work is a collection of cellularly dislodged fragments of my own culture and history arrived at through movement improvisations". Cindy Cummings
