LES BALLETS C. DE LA B

(Ghent)

Bonjour Madame, comment allez-vous aujourd'hui, il fait beau, il va sans doute pleuvoir etcetera

In the new production of Les BALLETS C. DE LA B., directed by one of Flander's most talented artists, the behaviour of a group of very different men is observed. They come and quench their thirst at an enormous drinking trough. In the year 1993 they bear the marks of history with them.

Based on statements by Marguerite Duras the work has also been inspired by the men themselves. Men who have dancing experience with Mark Morris, Meg Stuart, Claudio Bernardo, 'the corps de ballet' of the Opéra de Bastille, or with local jazz dance companies. What they have in common is their élan to move, their confusing world view and their fundamental sadness. Men who look around and find that life can often be intolerable.

In the beginning the men who had danced professionally had to become accustomed to the idea of confronting their choreographic material with children and youngsters without dancing experience. Such a confrontation created 'theatrical' tension, a central idea that has been the basic principle for the working process of LES BALLETS C. DE LA B. for years.

In Utrecht the company performed in open air on fallow land in the town centre. It is due to the success of this experiment that they realised they no longer needed the protective environment of a theatre and come to Fribourg with the challenge of adapting their performance to the Belluard.
